What to expect from your first mobile massage

If you have not had a therapist come to you before, here is the whole appointment from the first message to packing away, so nothing about it is a surprise.

Booking

Send a WhatsApp message or call with four things: your postcode or hotel and room number, the treatment or the length you want, one or two possible dates and times, and anything sore, injured or recently operated on. The more of that is in the first message, the faster a slot is confirmed. You will usually hear back within the hour between 8am and 10pm, with either a confirmation or the nearest available time. Nothing is booked until you have that reply.

Before the appointment

Clear a stretch of floor about two metres by one, on any surface, with room to walk around one side. A bedroom or living room is ideal, and a door that closes is helpful but not essential. You do not need to provide anything else: the table, fresh linens, unscented oil and a speaker all travel with him.

Arrival and setup

He arrives about ten minutes before the booked start time and sets up in whichever room has the space. That setup is not part of your hour, so the treatment itself starts on time. Packing away at the end takes about the same.

The consultation

Before starting he asks what you want from the session, what has been sore or restricted, whether you have any injuries, allergies or recent surgery, and how firm you like the pressure. If you have had massage before and know what works, say so. If you have not, the session starts at a medium pressure and adjusts.

Undressing and draping

You undress to your comfort, in private, usually to underwear, and lie under a towel or sheet. Professional draping is used throughout: only the area being worked on is uncovered at any point, and it is re-covered before he moves on. If any part of a routine is not something you want, it is left out.

During the treatment

Pressure is checked as he goes, around the halfway mark and each time he reaches a new area. Firmer, lighter, longer on one spot, skip another entirely: all of it is normal to ask for and none of it interrupts anything. Most people go quiet within the first ten or fifteen minutes. He works in silence unless you would rather talk.

Injuries and conditions

These change how a treatment is planned rather than ruling it out. Some areas are avoided, some are approached more gently, and occasionally the sensible answer is to check with your GP or physiotherapist first, in which case he will say so.

Afterwards

He leaves you to get up in your own time and packs away while you do. Payment is by card, bank transfer or cash at the end, not in advance. He will mention anything worth doing afterwards, such as drinking water and keeping the worked areas warm, and you can book the next appointment then or later.
