How often should you book a massage

There is no single right interval. It depends on why you are booking. Here is what tends to work for the main reasons people book a regular treatment.

For a one-off

Book when something has flared up, or before a specific event such as a race, a long flight or a busy stretch at work. A single treatment helps. Tension that has built up over months usually needs a second session a week or two later to hold, so if you can, plan for two rather than one.

For maintenance

Most regular clients settle on a treatment every three to four weeks. That is often enough to keep desk tension, training load or general stress from building back to where it started. If you are between treatments and the same area is tight again within a week, that is a sign to shorten the gap rather than push the pressure.

For the 30 minute treatment

The back, neck and shoulders treatment suits a shorter cycle, every one to two weeks, because it is quick and inexpensive enough to repeat. It works well as a standing fortnightly appointment for people whose work keeps loading the same muscles.

Through a training block

During marathon, triathlon or ultra training, weekly or fortnightly is common, timed for the day after a hard session rather than the day before one. A sports and recovery massage booked this way helps keep range of movement through the block. See marathon and race recovery for timing around the event itself.

Standing slots and blocks

If you already know you want massage to be a routine, a fixed weekly or fortnightly slot at the same time can be arranged at a fixed rate, and a block of five 60 minute treatments works out cheaper than five booked separately. Both are worth asking about rather than booking ad hoc each time.

Signs the interval is wrong

Too long: the same tension is fully back within a few days of a treatment, or you find yourself booking only when something has really seized up. Too often: the treated areas still feel worked from the last session, or you are booking firm, deep work more than once a week without a training reason. A lighter treatment can be had more frequently than a deep one.
